Kidney Disease Doesn’t Stop Murphy in Minnesota

For my first column, I interviewed Murphy, a super-friendly seven-year-old BichonFrise ShihTzu. He takes daily walks on Tilden Street in Fairmont, MN.

First, thank you, Murphy, for taking the time to chat with me. Please tell our readers a little bit about yourself.
My name is Murphy and Betty Pannkuk is my mom. Betty is my very best friend in the whole wide world. I sleep above her head every night. She’s got great hair!

I have kidney disease. I’m happy to say I’ve lived a lot longer than everyone thought I would. It’s probably because I’m loved so much, I go for lots of walks and Betty has monitored my diet very carefully over the years. I live life enjoying every day to the fullest. I play like a puppy, eat like a horse, and sleep like a baby! Every day is special.

Everyone should live life like you do! How did you and Betty meet?
We met about seven years ago, when I was just six weeks old. I had three sisters and Betty came to see all of us. For me, it was love at first sight. I just knew it. I followed her closely and sat next to her wherever she went. Betty’s pretty smart. She knew what I was saying and picked me as her pet right then and there! It was so exciting! We’ve been inseparable ever since!

Tell us about Betty.
She makes the yummiest hamburger and chicken dinners for me! Oh boy, are they good!

Betty is 93 and has lived in Fairmont practically her whole life. Her dad used to drive her to school in Granada from Fairmont (about 10 miles) in his Model T. The drive took over a half an hour in those days!

Betty has always been active – she loves to walk for miles and she used to ride her bicycle until about 10 years ago. She was even a dancer in the Fairmont Opera House Rockerettes!

She has three wonderful children; they live in Colorado and California. Best of all, Betty has seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren with another on the way this fall. I love it when they visit!

Betty is retired now and we spend all our time together, which makes me sooooo happy! We play a lot. She throws my toys for me to fetch, especially my favorite toy, which is a stuffed toy cat. It reminds me of Katy.

Who is Katy?
IMG_0271Katy the Cat is my neighbor and I’ve had a big crush on her since I was a little puppy. She’s 19 and we rub noses every time we see each other. I’ve heard cats and dogs aren’t supposed to like each other, but Katy and I have something very special indeed. She’s beautiful.

So, you have Katy the Cat and Betty your Mom… are there any more favorite females?
Oh yes! Barb! She’s Betty’s daughter-in-law and she takes me for walks every day. She brings me toys, too! She says I’m cute. She’s absolutely right.

Off the top of your head, Murphy…. What animal do you think you most look like?

Hmmmm. I’d have to say a llama. I’ve seen pictures. They’re pretty cute.

Thank you again for the interview! Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Everyone who meets me is my friend! Please say ‘hi’ to Betty, Barb and me when you see us walking! And I’m glad I’m the first pet to be interviewed for this column. I set the bar pretty high with my outgoing personality and extraordinary cuteness!
